The last couple of weeks have been focussing on the funding application to Creative New Zealand for the filming of Nga Reo O Te Whenua – the voices of the land. Richard Nunns’ story of the renaissance of the Taonga Puoro. It is taking shape now I think!!

Dead Tragic

What fun to attend the opening of Dead Tragic, Songs to Die for by Michael Nicholas Williams a few weeks ago. It continues at Centrepoint, Palmerston North until August 21. The 5 performers give their audience a most wonderful journey through all the emotions as they romp through 25 songs about death and dying. I do hope it gets a Wellington season, as I want to see it again.

On July 24, Robert Purvis conducted the orchestra, chorus, and 3 soloisti, Ian Virgo, Sal Viviano and Sarah Fox in an evening of “Oscar Winning Tunes” at

Teatro Verdi Opera House in Trieste . Robert travels to Trieste annually to conduct from his base in the United Kingdom.

I had been wanting professional mentoring from someone with an Arts background for some time- People like this are thin on the ground in NZ. I have now had several mentoring sessions with Jamie Bull and have found this to be extremely fruitful.

Jamie is an experienced Arts practitioner who is also a well -known Arts agent. This has given her a very broad and up to the minute knowledge of all Arts genres, not just in terms of what various art forms demand but of also of the scene both locally and internationally. She has a deep understanding of the difficulties that most artists encounter, including the fundamental problem of earning a living, and is able to offer pragmatic feedback and advice regarding establishing a career structure and prioritizing work goals.

This, together with Jamie’s ability to be warmly supportive and affirmative, has helped me to put my conducting career goals in place and work towards them more consistently, with increased confidence and clarity of purpose. It has also helped me to improve my regular work habits as a composer and to be more productive. I would recommend Jamie to anyone in the Arts wanting career mentoring. Great news – Nga Tae – “group of many colours” – consisting of Richard Nunns, Waimihi Hotere, Paddy Free and Horomona Horo, have been chosen by CNZ to attend the Australian World Music Expo in Melbourne in November this year. This is a new combination of performers which brings together the best of all their numerous previous collaborations with each other. This is very exciting for me as developing Producer/ Manager of the group.

Mentoring

I have been mentoring a number of diverse and interesting artists over the last few weeks. I love this part of my work, especially when they really start to see results for their work. Some are looking at taking a shift in their performance practice, some are revisiting their performance goals, and some are seeking support through the application process for CNZ funding.
